Salmon Falls | Oswego New York

One of New York’s most spectacular waterfalls resides in the rural landscape of

Oswego County, and the Big Swings App brought us right to her. Salmon Falls stands one hundred ten feet above a large plunge pool and is a must see for any waterfall lover or adventurer. The lip of the falls allow three separate cascades to pour down the face of the cliff side. The water crashes to the pool in bands of white waves while the strong winds push the mid-air streams back and forth. Mist peals itself from the falling water and drifts softly out to the open air above the pool. Sunstreaks illuminate the mist as it swirls overhead. Rainbows appear regularly as full circles in the midst of nature’s work.

The wide, well maintained path reaches two large overlooks accessible to anyone seeking the views of these great falls. For those who are a bit more risky, there’s a thin, stone path that zigzags down into the jungle-like gorge: this path is for experienced hikers and is extremely dangerous. The trail cuts back and forth across the hill while descending rapidly. Each corner offers up photo worthy sights of Salmon Falls along the way. The closer you get to the bottom, the more it feels like you’re in a scene from Jurassic Park. Reaching the base, the cliff faces shoot up over a hundred feet on three sides.

The closer you are to the falls, the more dangerous the area becomes.

Snakes hide beneath the rocks waiting to attack any potential intruder. Loose ridgelines above the shoreline scarcely hold the trees that have dared to take root. It is a good precaution to never stand below the overhanging sections of these cliffs! Big Swings Crew had once witnessed a stone the size of an SUV fall and shatter on the shoreline where we had just explored. It is safest to make-way across the stream to the stone beach section.

While the Big Swings Crew was on location, we witnessed two people take the 110-foot leap known to some as ”The Suicide Jump.” It is deadly to jump from these heights unless you are a professionally trained athlete and the location is 100% safety checked. It is illegal to swim and cliff jump at this location, and for good reason.

Practice #LeaveNoTrace and #KeepItClean while visiting this and any swimming hole you find yourself enjoying.

We absolutely do suggest you visit Salmon Falls; just don’t’ jump off of it.
