We had a chance to ask Sage a few questions about himself and his Cliff Jumping history ‒ here is what he had to say:
When did you first start Cliff Jumping?
I was a competitive diver for 11 years which included diving for a Division I University.
I started cliff jumping back in August of 2015, and have since been trying to translate everything I know as a springboard and platform diver to the cliffs– it’s been a fun learning process!
What was your first experience like?
Exhilarating! Hooked since the first dive!
What does it feel like when you step up to the ledge to jump?
It makes me feel at home; I feel excited to jump!
What’s your favorite kind of Jump Spot?
40-50 foot jumps, deep water, oceanic, easy to get out, and clean take-off ledge
What’s your personal favorite trick to do?
Double gainer or front 1 and 1/2 with 2 twists (see South Point Instagram video :).
What’s your all time favorite location visited?
South Point, Big Island, Hawaii.
Have you ever been seriously injured while Cliff Jumping?
Yes– gnarly gash in my leg from a big wave hitting while exiting a jump spot.
What did you learn from that experience?
Respect the ocean, it’s unforgiving.
Are you willing to contribute in our ongoing efforts to educate the public about keeping the jumping environments safe and clean?
Do you have any accolades you would care to share?
3rd place at Junior Nationals on 1m springboard
Record holder at 4 different high schools
All MAC team at Eastern Michigan 4 years in a row
4 time- National qualifier as a Springboard Diver
2 time- NCAA Zone C finalist
